Fancy That!

A hodgepodge of fancy things and things that I, Brianna Ashby, fancy.

I'll say it again.

FANCY.

In the 1970’s my father started making feather earrings (most likely to attract beautiful long haired hippy girls like my mother).  For biker chicks, tarot card readers, pseudo-hippies, and girls that like it wild, feathers have never gone out of style, so, my father has never taken them out of his product line-up.  When I was a kid I would sit with him in his workshop in the basement as he carefully plucked matching feathers from piles of pheasant skins, still resplendent with gorgeous feathers, and expertly found pairs of white fluffy feathers from long strings I would don like boas. As a result, I’ve been wearing feather earrings almost as long as I’ve had pierced ears, in fact, I have a pair that my dad made for my mom in the 70’s.  Even though they show their age, I perk them up by putting them in a steady steam of stream from my tea kettle and they get as light and fluffy as 30 some-odd year old feathers get.  (This can be done with any feathers when they’re feeling down.)
This is a sampling of some of my father’s current feather creations which can be yours for $20 a pair.  Handmade with sterling silver wrapping and ear wires, they can also be customized (to a degree) if you’d like a color combination that you don’t see here. (Note: Feathers that have been dyed, especially those that have been dyed unnatural colors, don’t factor into the customization scenario I’ve laid out before you.)
If you are a girl who likes it wild, or has a friend that gets a little feral, message me and get a little awesome.

Buying gifts is a minor obsession.  I search and scour and surf until it hits me.  THE PERFECT GIFT.  I will give gifts belatedly or not at all if I can’t find the right one for the occasion because there is nothing worse than receiving a half-assed gift.  (Don’t get me started on finding corresponding cards for a purchased gift, that’s an obsession in and of itself.  Oh god, and the wrapping paper!)  There is a thrill in finding something that you know is going to be loved, worn, displayed, or eaten with relish by someone whose love, apparel, housing, or digestion you have a vested interest in.

I actually jumped up and down when I spotted this emerald green beauty in my favorite little costume shop because I knew it belonged on the head of my dear friend Lauren. The gentleman who was arranging a display of feather boas was already casting me strange glances when I turned the chapeau over in my hands and saw the tag.  I could barely maintain an iota of decorum! I nearly leapt out of my skin!  A Schiaparelli!  In my hands!  A gift that couldn’t be more perfect for a sartorially gifted friend with a healthy appreciation for the absurd.*

If I had put this much effort into math class my SAT score would have been killer.

(This hat, and a pair of saddle shoes that I rented to complete an Audrey Horne costume, were found at Sophia’s in Greenwich, CT.)

*A tidbit of fashion history:  Elsa Schiaparelli was heavily influenced by the Surrealists and Dadaists and collaborated with heavyweights like Dali and Jean Cocteau to create her most iconic designs.  Also, she and Coco Chanel severely disliked one another.
